ArtCraft is a project building free, open source creative apps that mirror Adobe's main tools: PhotoCraft for photo editing, VectorCraft for illustration, FilmCraft for video and several more, all with no subscription. It has become one of the most talked about launches of the month, but it is still early software, so here is what UAE business owners, designers and marketing teams actually need to know.

The short version: it is real, it is free, and it is moving fast, but it is not yet ready to replace your paid tools on client work. If your team wants to understand how AI is changing creative software like this, our AI course in Dubai covers the tools and workflows behind it.
1. What ArtCraft actually is
ArtCraft describes itself as a team that builds open source tools for artists. Its main product, ArtCraft Studio, is an AI image and video studio that runs as a desktop app or in the browser and is "free to start" with "no subscription". Around it sits a growing set of standalone "Craft" apps, each aimed at one creative job.
2. The apps and the Adobe tools they mirror
The first wave covers the core of a creative suite. PhotoCraft handles image editing with layers, masks, type and PSD files. VectorCraft is for vector illustration. FilmCraft covers video editing, colour and sound. LightCraft is a photo library with raw development. PdfCraft reads, organises and protects PDFs. EffectCraft does motion graphics and visual effects, and DesignCraft handles page layout and publishing. The ArtCraft site also lists WordCraft, DeckCraft, GridCraft, SoundCraft and CADCraft. The project states it is not affiliated with Adobe and uses Adobe names only to describe compatible workflows.
3. Built in Rust, runs almost everywhere
According to its GitHub page, PhotoCraft is a "clean-room reimplementation" of Photoshop written in pure Rust, built from public specs and observed behaviour with no proprietary code or assets. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a web version in the browser. The feature list is already serious: 67 tools, 16 types of non-destructive adjustment layers, smart objects, CMYK and Lab colour at up to 32 bits per channel, and real PSD and PSB support.
4. Free and open source, with no subscription
PhotoCraft is dual licensed under MIT or Apache 2.0, two of the most permissive open source licences. That means businesses can use it, modify it and build on it without licence fees. The developer community has noticed: the PhotoCraft repository has passed 50,000 stars on GitHub since it went public at the end of September.
5. It is early alpha, not a daily Photoshop replacement yet
This is the part most headlines skip. The project itself says PhotoCraft is in early alpha and "not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work". The biggest gaps it lists are generative AI features, a number of missing tools, typography and pro workflow depth, and plug-in compatibility. Treat it as something to test, not something to bet a client deadline on.
6. AI helped build it, and AI agents can drive it
Coverage of the launch, including The Dieline, reports that developer Brandon Thomas built the suite with heavy help from Anthropic's Claude. That speed is the real story: a small team shipping a credible alternative to decades old software in weeks. PhotoCraft can also be controlled by AI agents through a command line, a JSON control channel and an MCP server, and its smart selection runs on your own machine with no cloud and no account.
7. What UAE creative and marketing teams should do now
Do not cancel your Adobe plan yet. Instead, give one designer an afternoon to try PhotoCraft and VectorCraft on internal work: social posts, quick edits, opening PSD files from partners. Check how well files move back and forth with your current tools. Agencies and in-house teams paying for many Creative Cloud seats should watch the next few months closely, because if these apps keep improving at this pace, the cost of a creative toolkit could change a lot.
Whether you stay with Adobe or start testing open source tools, what matters is the result on screen. If you need brand and design work that holds up across every channel, or want help choosing the right tools for your team, talk to us.
